Brief Overview
Methyl caprylate also known as methyl octanoate is a fatty acid methyl ester that has a molecular formula of C9H18O2. Methyl caprylate has an orange-like flavor that is naturally found in citric fruits. Methyl caprylate is a colorless liquid that is insoluble in an inorganic solution.
Manufacturing Process
Methyl caprylate is fabricated by the esterification process between caprylic acid and methanol at 60°C. An additional method is possible by isolating methyl caprylate from the esterification process between triglycerides/fatty acids and methanol via vacuum distillation. The vacuum distillation allows methyl caprylate to be purified therefore increasing the concentration.
Cosmetic Applications
Methyl caprylate provides the oil needed on the surface of the skin to form a layer of lipids. The layer inhibits water evaporation and helps to moisturize the skin. Therefore, methyl caprylate is able to retain moisture present in the skin to prevent the skin from drying. On the other hand, the sweetly fragrant scent of methyl caprylate is used as a perfuming agent.
Food Applications
Methyl octanoate has an orange-like flavor and is used as a flavoring agent in the food industry. The addition of methyl octanoate as a flavoring agent helps to enhance food quality.
Agrochemicals
Methyl caprylate herbicidal properties are used to manufacture herbicides. The compound has the ability to regulate plant growth by influencing plant hormones.
